Making Sgian Dubhs

We have been handcrafting sgian dubhs in Scotland since 1978. Our range of highland wear accessories has expanded over the years and we now have the one of the most extensive collections of sgian dubhs and highlandwear accessories available.

Making Process

Handcrafted Sgian Dubhs

With over 45 years of manufacturing and design experience, we create new styles that prove continually popular within the highland wear market.

1. Preparing the handles

We have a wide and varied selection of sgian dubhs using many different materials for our handles. Our collection includes Scottish staghorn, wood, resin and pewter handled sgian dubhs. After carefully selecting the materials our handles are then prepared for the next stage. Here you can see walnut has been glued to pieces of staghorn.

2. Shaping the handles

The handles are then shaped and polished by our skilled crafts people. Each material is different so care needs to be taken when shaping and forming the handles shapes.

3. Drilling and fitting

Next the handles are drilled to allow for the sgian dubh blade to be fitted. We fit as standard plain stainless steel blades as well as Damascus blades and bottle opener blades. Any mounts, stone tops or motifs are fitted at this stage to make each sgian dubh unique.

4. Finished sgian dubh

Our sgian dubhs are finished with a sheath to protect the blade and allows to be safely fitted in the sock to accompany your kilt outfit. From day wear sgian dubhs to more formal dress sgian dubhs we have the largest selection available in the highland wear market.
